Shameful: Media Tradition Of Enabling Breitbart Hate Lives On At Facebook

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 11:00

Here we go again: Facebook just became the latest traditional media player to enable the right-wing hate of Breitbart News.

Unveiling its news tab initiative last week, on which Facebook is partnering with outlets such as CNN, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, the company also confirmed that the far-right conspiracy bastion Breitbart News is being included in the prestigious online rollout, even though Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg can't give a straight answer for why the social media giant is partnering in a "high-quality" news initiative with a site that featured a "Black Crime" watch and publishes well-known white nationalists. “Part of having this be a trusted source is that it needs to have a diversity of views in there, so I think you want to have content that represents different perspectives,” Zuckerberg said last week.

Andrew Gillum Stands By Kamala Harris' Protest: 'Led To Changing Of The Rules'

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 10:47

Kamala Harris made a strong, risky stand regarding this past weekend's events at Benedict College, an HBCU in South Carolina. At the risk of her campaign, Sen. Harris boycotted a Democratic Candidates' forum when she learned Donald Trump would be presented with an award on criminal justice reform by the 20/20 Bipartisan Justice Center - the group sponsoring the weekend's events.

On CNN's New Day, Alysin Camerota asked her guest, former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, about the criminal justice forum, and Senator Kamala Harris' impact on the event. The 20/20 BJC is a group of Black Republicans, Democrats, and Independents focused on criminal justice reform.

Some of her colleagues were critical of her decision, notably Sen. Cory Booker and CNN's Van Jones.

CNN Allows Swiftboating On The Air: Sean Duffy Edition

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 10:40

The Right is swiftboating Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. It's what they do.

Sean Duffy adds a layer of Cavutoing to the mix, "just asking the question" about Vindman's "affinity" for Ukraine. A reminder: The United States Congress voted to provide military aid to Ukraine in defense of their democratic government against the Russian INVADING force which has annexed Crimea. Trump held up that aid, illegally, to blackmail the Ukrainians into announcing an investigation of his political rival. All impeachable. Duffy's job (and he's being PAID by Jeff Zucker to do it) is to muddy the waters.

SEAN DUFFY: It seems very clear that he is incredibly concerned about Ukrainian defense. I don't know that he's concerned about American policy ... we all have an affinity to our homeland where we came from ... he has an affinity for the Ukraine.

He has an "affinity" for our ally and for a congressional vote to provide aid. It is illegal for Donald Trump to stop that in exchange for dirt on Biden.

The swiftboating must fail this time around. Obviously, honesty and truth will not get any help from CNN.

Frank Luntz Wants World Series Boo-ers 'Held Accountable'

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 10:09

There's no crying in baseball, as Tom Hanks said in "A League of Their Own."

But apparently Frank Luntz thinks North Korean-style demands for loyalty to "Dear Leader" in baseball is perfectly okay.

Luntz graced the soundstage of Ingraham Angle Monday night to declare that (not making this up) the baseball fans at Game 5 of the World Series should be "held accountable" for booing Donald Trump.

FRANK LUNTZ: The fact is, they should hold those fans accountable. Don't boo the president! You may disagree with him, you may say that he's not what you wanted, but you don't boo him, you show respect for him. And I'll tell you something, I think this event is going to have an impact...

LAURA INGRAHAM: It's huge! It's going to be a campaign commercial.

A campaign commercial for WHOM, Laura? Anyone with their panties in a twist over Trump getting booed at a baseball game is long gone into the Trump cult.

Dear Joe And Mika, One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 07:31

Poor Joe. He's taking it hard that people weren't inspired by his and Mika's attempt to both-sides the World Series crowds who chanted "Lock him up!" to Donald Trump.

Fox News Guest Slimes Lt. Col. Vindman: 'Some People Might Call That Espionage'

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 07:30

When the news broke that Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman was going to testify about his firsthand knowledge of Trump's call with Ukrainian President Zelensky, most cable news focused on his statement and what he was expected to say to the three committees taking his deposition.

All, that is, but Laura Ingraham, who dug up John Yoo (yes, THAT John Yoo) and Alan Dershowitz to slime a multi-decade veteran who is the recipient of a Purple Heart for his service in Iraq.

The shameless sliming of a decorated veteran and high-ranking national security official begins with the 19th paragraph in Monday's New York Times article about him:

While Colonel Vindman’s concerns were shared by a number of other officials, some of whom have already testified, he was in a unique position. Because he emigrated from Ukraine along with his family when he was a child and is fluent in Ukrainian and Russian, Ukrainian officials sought advice from him about how to deal with Mr. Giuliani, though they typically communicated in English.

Decorated Iraq War Vet Col. Alexander Vindman Demolishes Trump's 'Perfect Call' Narrative

Tue, 10/29/2019 - 07:29

Donald Trump has a problem. The defense Republicans have been using for weeks - that the whistleblower is passing along second or third hand information - is effectively gone. Why? Because a witness to the phone call and other disturbing interactions between Donald Trump and his staff and Ukrainian officials is testifying tomorrow. Furthermore, he is more or less untouchable.

Lieutenant Colonel Alexander S. Vindman is a recipient of a purple heart for his time in the Iraq War. In his opening statement he talks about his background prior to working at the White House:

"For more than two decades, it has been my honor to serve as an officer in the United States Army. As an infantry officer, I served multiple overseas tours, including South Korea and Germany, and a deployment to Iraq for combat operations. In Iraq, I was wounded in an IED attack and awarded a Purple Heart."

He has also served in embassies around the world, including Kiev, Ukraine and Moscow, Russia. He also previously worked for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and in 2018 joined the National Security Council.

After talking about his childhood as an immigrant from Russia, he makes it clear that what he is going to say in the deposition is not politically motivated:

C&L's Late Nite Music Club With The Replacements

Mon, 10/28/2019 - 23:01

The last few days were a bit discombobulated for yours truly. My darling partner in crime and best friend had a major asthma attack which was amplified by a very aggressive and possibly life threatening virus and it led to a four day hospital stay.

Though we have insurance (which is spendy and not all that great but still insurance none the less), her first concern was the bill that will rack up and the loss of pay for days missed at work. If it wasn't bad enough that a person has to worry about their health, it is also heartbreaking that the first thing that comes to anyone's mind in this country in the case of a medical emergency is how they're gonna pay for it.

She is doing much better though and her sense of humor is always sharp. As a matter of fact, the morning following her first night stay, she said to me "I keep finding myself wanting to hum along to that one Replacements song."

Tonight, "that one" song is what we're gonna listen to.

Sure, this emergency (and the bills and days missed paid from work in a low wage town for both of us) is a setback for the savings plan we have in action so we can move to a different city in the new year. We will struggle through it though and we will persevere. We're too stubborn and cool not to. Normally, I usually just reserve mentioning the following on my rock-n-roll podcasts and not here on C&L, but I do have a "tip jar", and every little bit helps in my plan of getting ahead.

What are you listening to tonight?
